Community for First Steps

About us

The step before the first job is the hardest one. We exist to make it exist.

Why we exist

The missing step

Everyone remembers being told to get experience — and nobody remembers being told how. The big job boards were built for people who already have CVs full of jobs, references, and confidence. If you are inexperienced and have none of those, the front door of working life is locked.

Community started with a simple observation: within walking distance of almost every young person are dozens of real businesses that would happily give someone their first taste of work — a fortnight of shadowing, helping, learning. What was missing was never the goodwill. It was the bridge.

What we are

A job board for first steps — not jobs

Community is a work experience platform for 16 to 24 year olds. Not careers, not contracts — placements: short, local, real. Every business on the platform is checked by a human before a single student can see it, every application gets an answer, and the entire platform is free for students. It is the training ground the world of work forgot to build.

What we believe

Four things we won't bend on

Local first

A first step you can walk or bus to. Opportunity should start on your own doorstep.

Trust is built by humans

Verification is never automatic. A person checks every business, every time.

Silence is disrespect

A young person who tries deserves an answer. Every application is responded to — always.

First steps are free

No student will ever pay to reach their own beginning.

The name

Why "Community"

Because no one gives a young person their first step alone. It takes the café that says yes, the school that points the way, the adviser who nudges, the parent who reassures. Our job is to connect that community — and put a first rung back on the ladder, town by town.
